Orchidae Oil Painting

Ernst Haeckel was an incredible artist and biologist who introduced new species to the public through his work in the 1800’s. I found his lithograph color plate titled “Orchidae” especially striking, so had to see what it would look like if painted in oil. I used the grisaille technique to render these plants and glazed warm tones on the top layer.
